Network Address Translaters

G'd Peter

A friend of mime who has Bigpond broadband has used a number of websites, including those below, to verify his IP address

http://www.ipchicken.com/

http://WhatisMyIP.com/

However, both sites are providing him with the same INCORRECT IP address.

I've used the sites and found it works A-OK for me.

Have you come across this before? Do you have any suggestions?

Cheers, Col

Hi Col,
Yes I have seen this before often ISP’s run a Network Address Translator (NAT) where you when you dial up or connect via ADSL you are given an internal Internet Point address which is then linked to an external IP address.

Also if your friend has a router it also does the same with a NAT and gets the ip address from the ISP and then links all the computers connected to that router with 192.168.x.x addresses. This could be what he is seeing.

Peter
